Family Tech Sabbath

One full day a quarter, off all platforms, fully present
Quarterly · Sundown to Sundown · Anchored in Liturgical Time
Why This Exercise Exists
The Jewish Sabbath is a full day where work stops, the family gathers, and the world is allowed to rest. Catholic Sunday observance is a softer version of the same idea: Sunday Mass, family time, the deliberate refusal of busyness.
In 2026, the most invasive form of busyness is not work. It is the algorithm. A Catholic family that observes Sunday but spends 6 hours scrolling on Sunday afternoon has not actually observed Sunday. The Tech Sabbath is the practice of taking the Sunday discipline seriously enough to include the screen.

Prepare (One Week Before)
  • Tell your circle (family, close friends, work) that you are offline for this day
  • Set an out-of-office for email if needed
  • Pre-write any urgent messages
  • Print whatever you need: Mass readings, a book, directions
  • Charge a non-smart camera if you want photos
  • Buy groceries the day before
3
The Day Itself
PhonesPowered off and put in a drawer, or in another room, or surrendered to a parent.
Computers, tablets, TVs, streaming, gamingOff.
What stays onLights, refrigerator, oven, stove, car (if you must drive to Mass).
What you do (suggestions, not requirements):
  • Mass (in person, not livestream)
  • A walk
  • A meal cooked from scratch
  • A nap
  • Read a book on paper
  • A board game with the family
  • The rosary
  • Sit on the porch with nothing in your hand
  • Talk to your spouse without checking anything mid-sentence
4
The Next Day: Reflect
15 min
  • What was hardest about the day?
  • What did I notice that I had been missing?
  • What did my children, my spouse, or my friends see in me that they had not seen?
  • What is one small practice from yesterday that I will keep this week?
?
Common Objections
"I cannot be unreachable for 24 hours. Work needs me."
Genuine emergencies will reach you another way (a knock on the door, a phone call to your spouse). The 24-hour offline window has existed for all of human history except the last 15 years. Your work will be fine.
"My kids will revolt."
Yes. First time. Less the second time. By the fourth time it becomes the day they look forward to.
"I will lose my place in conversations I am having online."
You will. The conversations will be there Monday. If they will not, they were not real conversations.
"The family that prays together, stays together."

"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work; but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God."
